Alright guys, here it is! Over the years, I have received so many questions on how to start a blog, I figured this would be a great place to share my own journey on starting Hills Gypsy.
I started my blog in 2014! I had just finished filming Dash Dolls, and really wanted a place that I could share my thoughts, beauty tips, and ootds. I wanted an outreach other than just posting photos on my Instagram and a friend suggested for me to start a blog! I jumped at the thought and the first thing is started to research more about the different platforms you could use to launch a website. I personally use WordPress, but there are so many options, such as Square Space, Wix, Weebly, and so many more!
The first step is to think of a name, a “brand” that represents you! I went with Hills Gypsy because it represented me being from LA and tying in my middle eastern background. Choose something that really brings out what you want to share and what you want people to associate your brand with.
Second is to purchase your domain! You can use hosts such as Blue Host, Go Daddy, Hosting, & etc. If the name you want is not available for purchase, it means someone has taken the site already. So just readjust to something more unique!
Congratulations, you now own your website!
From here, it gets pretty easy. It’s all about writing what interests you! It’s not about writing what you think people want to hear. That will only get you so far. If you stick to your guns and write about what you care about, the right readers will follow your blog.
Be consistent the first year. Try to get out 1 blog post a week, if possible. The key to sharing your blog is linking them outside of your website. I personally use Instagram and Pinterest to share my blog posts with others.
Here are some key messages to take away….
- Be yourself – The point is to always be yourself and bring that to the table. Because if anyone is going to follow you, it’s going to be because they like YOU. It takes way more effort faking it or writing about what you think people want to read about than actually being yourself.
- You don’t need a fancy site to start your blog – Yes, it helps to have a nice backdrop but your content is more important. All that fluff can come afterwards. Start writing and down the line you can upgrade your site if you feel like it.
- Content – As for camera, it have to be a digital camera or a DSLR. You can easily use your cellphone to shoot images. The iPhone has such a crisp clear lense that you can get away with just using that to post your photos. Half the time when I’m traveling, I’m using my iPhone to shoot.
- Have fun – Seriously, ENJOY YOURSELF. Write about what your passionate about. You like Bananas? Write out your favorite recipes and tell us all about it. You like denim? Show us your top 5 ways to rock it. The world is your oyster!
Always remember that everything takes time. You’re in no rush. Start your blog and take the time building it and you will see growth. Don’t be discouraged because you see others with millions of followers and you’re no where near. It takes time and they’ve probably been at it for years!
If you guys have blogs, leave me a comment below. I’d love to check them out and support!
