I’m writing this post because I get a lot of DM’s from friends, followers, and family, about how I started blogging and if it’s possible for them to start one themselves.
The answer is….YES. It’s never too late to start a blog! How I actually started blogging, was during my time on DASH Dolls. For anyone who doesn’t know, I was on the Kardashian spin off show, DASH Dolls, back in 2015. I used to work for the K’s at their retail boutique DASH for a few years, and in between those years they had a spin off about the store! During my time on it, I wanted an outreach other than just posting photos on my Instagram and a friend suggested for me to start a blog. I jumped at the thought, because writing has always been a favorite of mine. Ever since I was a little girl, I use to sit in my room, on an old 1995 Windows computer, typing up my short poems. I was so obsessed I would print them out, have my dad laminate them, and put them in a folder for others to read. I even started my own small short story during middle school. I had a few classmates in on the story and I’d write out new chapters every week for them to read. So writing a blog was definitely something I wanted to do!
When I first started, I wore the clothes out of my own closet, drove around with friends, and found pretty backdrops to shoot. Nothing fancy. Just did what felt good. I wrote out a few posts before launching, just so there was enough content once I uploaded my site, and wrote about my favorite outfits and makeup looks.
Slowly, as I built my site, brands started reaching out to work with me. At first I wanted to work with everyone, but once I started building an aesthetic and persona, I wanted to be selective with who I collaborated with. I suggest working with the brands that best represent you! This way your audience knows who you are and what you’re about.
At first, I really had no idea what I was doing, what to write about, or who my audience was. It took me some time to get that all down and honestly, there is no rush. Trial and error is a part of any project/business and important to go through.
Here are a few major pointers to start any blog!
- Be yourself. This is SO important and a common question I get, “What do I write about? What will people want to read?” and honestly, it doesn’t matter if you have a million followers or just 10. The point is to always be yourself and bring that to the table. Because if anyone is going to follow you, it’s going to be because they like YOU. Besides, it takes way more effort faking it than actually being yourself.
- You don’t need a fancy site to start your blog. Yes, it helps to have a nice backdrop but your content is more important. All that fluff can come afterwards.
- Camera. Doesn’t have to be a digital camera or a DSLR. You can easily use your cellphone to shoot images. The iPhone has such a crisp clear lense that you can get away with just using that to post your photos. Half the time when I’m traveling, I’m using my iPhone to shoot. Nobody wants to walk about with heavy expensive equipment, unless you’re a photographer. Grab your cellphone, find a pretty wall, and CLICK.
- Have fun. Seriously, ENJOY YOURSELF. Write about what your passionate about. You like Bananas? Write out your favorite recipes and tell us all about it. You like denim? Show us your top 5 ways to rock it. The world is your oyster!
Always remember that everything takes time. You’re in no rush. Start your blog and take the time building it and you will see growth. Don’t be discouraged because you see others with millions of followers and you’re no where near. It takes time and they’ve probably been at it for years!
